SUNNY SOCIETY

Program | Concern for Climate Change

Overview

Man and nature complement each other. A healthy relationship between man and nature can make the earth fit for future generations.

Over the past three decades, climate change has been the topic of much debate and discussion among scientists and the general public. As a result of increasing industrialization and urbanization, the world’s climate change is constantly causing abnormalities in various natural environments. This is, correspondingly, leading towards the extinction of many species of plants and animals.

Global climate change is having a negative impact on our society. It is leading to an increase in the number of refugees and vulnerable people. The frequency of cyclones has grown significantly in coastal countries like Bangladesh.

In addition to the development of infectious diseases worldwide, the consequences of climate change on global food production have also been noticed.

So, combating climate change is one of the biggest challenges we face today. Sunny Society has developed a program called “Concern for Climate Change” to address this impending threat and restore the Earth to its previous state.

Current Projects and Activities:

Sunny Society has taken various initiatives to reduce the risks of climate change by integrating responses to climate change and climate variability into disaster risk reduction, poverty reduction and sustainable development efforts. Sunny Society’s current climate action projects and activities are described below.

  1. Climate change Campaign:

People of Bangladesh do not have enough understanding about climate change and global warming. As a result, they are unaware of this critical issue. Sunny Society organizes different campaign to increase the awareness and understanding of climate change amongst local people. It is continuous awareness-raising process in the rural and urban area to combat climate change.

  1. Green love:

The idea of “Green Love” is the love for the nature. The goals of the project are to reduce global warming and counteract climate change by making the area green and healthy. Sunny Society offers free plants to notable individuals and organizations in order to increase their awareness of the value of planting trees and indoor plants and to help them form a habit of doing so.

  1. Plant parenting:

Trees are the part and parcel of our environment. They are the most important gift of nature. We need oxygen for living and trees to provide us with oxygen and take in carbon dioxide. According to scientists, Planting billions of trees across the world is one of the biggest and cheapest ways of taking CO2 out of the atmosphere to tackle the climate crisis. Sunny Society provides a variety trees and plants including fruit seedlings to peasants in rural areas, which they nurture and grow themselves. Besides, the members of the Sunny Society plant trees in the yards of various educational institutions and religious places.

  1. Weather Precaution:

People in the rural costal areas have faced massive losses due to various natural calamities including floods and cyclones. As they do not have proper technology, they are generally unable to know about the flood forecast. This damage can be reduced to a great extent by taking proper precautions. Members of the Sunny Society provide early warning to villagers in various areas before floods and cyclones.

Sometimes farmers do not harvest crops at the right time due to lack of knowledge about the forecast of rains, and the crops are wasted at various times. Sunny society alerts them directly and through mobile phones to harvest the crops at the right time.

  1. Eco Club:

Sunny Society has undertaken a project by establishing a club for the youth named “Eco Club” to empower them to participate and take up meaningful environmental activities and projects. Objective of the project is to organise seminars, debates, lectures and popular talks on environmental issues to motivate the youth to keep their surroundings green and clean.

Objectives:

  1. To improve awareness and understanding of climate change amongst citizens.
  2. To make aware regarding the role of people in protecting and conserving natural resources.
  3. To empower youth to take an active role in the solutions to environmental challenges.
  4. To expand the knowledge based on climate change for effective adaptation in the agriculture sector.
  5. To foster public awareness about potential impacts of climate change to encourage policy changes.
  6. To work for healthy, neat and clean cities and urban environments.
Significance

Bangladesh is frequently cited as one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change because of its physical, social and economic conditions.

Bangladesh is experiencing the effects of climate change, and these effects are getting worse every day. Disasters brought on by climate change are already affecting several coastal and southern regions. For instance, in Bangladesh’s coastal region, much of the land is now salty, there is shortage of drinking water, low land production, health issues and rise in the sea level.

Combating climate change is one of the biggest challenges for developing countries like Bangladesh. United Nations have also taken some global initiative to combat climate change, such as the Sustainable Development Goals, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement.

Sustainable Development Goal 13 is about climate action and statement of this goal is to “Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts”.

To attain this sustainable development goal, a collective effort by the government and non-governmental organizations is much crucial.

In this regard Sunny Society can play an important role with the government to combat climate change by increasing public awareness and taking proper action.
